Description |
|

WipLL is a wireless communications
system capable of supporting voice, data and video
services. WipLL consists of the following components:
 |
Radio Link, consisting of
air-protocol, Outdoor Unit (ODU) at the base-station,
and End-Point Unit (EPU) at the subscriber premises. |
 |
Commercial router |
 |
IP-Gateway and IP-Gatekeeper. |
The heart of the WipLL system contains
Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum digital radios, and an
air-protocol supporting Bandwidth-on-Demand (BoD) and Time
Bounded Services (TBS). Each outdoor radio contains an
internal high gain antenna. Radio’s software
controlled transmitted power is up to 4 Watts EIRP,
enabling to reach distances of up to 25 km without costly
external power amplifier.
Each base-station can have many radios
connected via Ethernet 10BaseT cable to a standard router.
One WipLL base-station may have as many as 16 radios
connected to the standard router, providing as much as 64
Mbps capacity to be shared among the users. A commercial
IP-gateway is also connected to the router on one end, and
to the PSTN on the other end. This IP-gateway processes
PSTN signals, which are converted in the gateway to IP
addressed packets, which are fed into the router. The
gatekeeper performs the functions of: Call Processing,
Echo Cancellation and the telephony part of the Network
Management. On the subscriber side, the End-Point radio
connects to an indoor unit containing a standard
IP-telephone interface unit and an Ethernet interface.
The system transmits data at high
speeds: basic speed allocated to a single user may be as
much as 3Mbps in the US, or 4 Mbps outside the US. The
system supports a variety of network topologies:
point-to-point, point-to-multipoint,
multipoint-to-multipoint, clusters of users (LANs, or
PBXs), and single users. Bridging and routing functions
are supported in many of these topologies, either by
external router, or by the WipLL bridging and routing
software
The air traffic is managed by RDC’s
proprietary protocol which enables packetized
transmissions, in uncommitted directions, while
maintaining high data throughput under changing channel
conditions and for various packet sizes. The protocol is
transmitting packets in accordance with priorities based
on the applications they belong to, thus ensuring arrival
of packets within the time boundaries required by the
corresponding application (Quality of Service feature).
The radio at the client’s end, the outdoor
End-Point User (EPU), is of the same hardware units as the
base-station radios in addition to the IP-telephony
interfaces at the indoor unit. This radio provides a
direct Ethernet connection to a LAN, or to the client’s
computer, and to the telephone
WipLL has a number of unique features in which the product
excels over its competitors:
 |
Integrated Services on a single
platform and with single protocol: telephony, data and
multimedia. |
 |
Quality of Service (QoS). |
 |
Very high spectrum utilisation |
 |
Very efficient frequency reuse in a
multi-cell environment, due to proprietary Dynamic
Channel Allocation (DCA) algorithms |
 |
Toll quality (copper equivalent)
telephony and voice band data |
 |
Full support of various networking
functionality and topologies: point-to-point,
point-to-multipoint, bridging, routing |
 |
Ability to operate many radios in
one location (increases base-station capacity and
saves site installation and maintenance costs) |
 |
Comprehensive Network Management
system. Multiple choice of installation and field
survey tools including planning tools for
base-station’s location |
 |
High performance radio circuitry
design with up to 1 Watt transmission power, capable
of low cost production |
